“We tried to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it,” the actress said in Monday’s episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast. “He left the studio. He needed a break.”

In the film, Johansson played a Siri-esque phone operating system, Samantha, with whom Phoenix’s character, Theodore, fell in love.

Recording their phone sex scene was “gross,” the Oscar nominee, 37, recalled.

“You don’t want to hear your voice ever,” she explained to co-hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman.

Johansson was not initially cast as Samantha; “The Walking Dead” star Samantha Morton recorded all of the dialogue before she was replaced.

“Samantha was with us on set and was amazing,” director Spike Jonze told Vulture of the swap in June 2013.

“It was only in post-production, when we started editing, that we realized that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together,” he continued. “So we recast.”

Morton, 45, struggled to find “perspective” over the choice, telling Vanity Fair in July 2019 that she felt as if she had “created a painting and then put it in the attic, and nobody’s seen it.”
