Sherri Papini, a mother from California, eventually acknowledged that her account of being kidnapped at gunpoint was a HOAX

She was given an 18-month jail term, according to a statement released on Monday by US Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

Papini cried as she left the courtroom and was surrounded by her loved ones, including her mother, who was also crying.

Pled guilty to one count of mail fraud and lying to a federal officer for simulating a kidnapping in 2016 in April.

However, after looking into her alleged kidnapping, officials discovered that Papini had made up the incident and had been hiding out in Southern California with an ex-boyfriend.

Papini not only misled the authorities, her friends, and her family, but she also lied to the California Victim Compensation Board.

Papini will be required to repay the California Victim Compensation Board $310000 in reparation.

Attorneys for Shubb's defence had begged for leniency, asking that she spend the most of her time under home arrest.

As she arrived in the Sacramento courthouse on Monday accompanied by her lawyer, William Portanova, Papini declined to speak with the media.
